“Pantyhose are supposed to constrict and shape a woman’s body to an ideal form,” she says. “But the way I use them distorts the body into grotesque shapes, speaking to the unconscious that refuses to be constrained, leading to all kinds of mishaps and follies.”

-Dominique Rey, a Winnipeg-based artist in “Rey of Light” in Flare December 2013

An Ode to Helen-Alice of Super Fun Night

Are you watching Rebel Wilson’s Super Fun Night? ‘Cause you should be. There are a million reasons to love the show, but being style-obsessives, we’re particularly enchanted by Helen-Alice, a character on the show played by Liza Lapira. She’s a woman of colour, and she’s got crazy style–think eccentric librarian chic (in the show she’s got a career of Risk Assessment). Lots of embroidered cardis, killer purple glasses, charm necklaces and collared shirts. See some of our fave looks below!

“Style is a way to define who I am out in the world versus the character I’m playing,” says Washington […] “I’ve always understood there’s a power in costume,” she says, “like when I traveled at a young age from the Bronx to my school in Manhattan–two different universes.”

-Kerry Washington in “Sitting Pretty” by Heidi Mitchell in Lucky Dec/Jan 2013

Seems Necessary: An Orange Winter Coat

Hold, on before you panic, consider this:

1. Orange! Orange will guarantee you stand out, because no one else would think to wear it.

2. In the right cut it looks impossibly chic and bold, not ski jacket-y or safety vest-y.

3. In a sea of dark winter coats (and even in a sea of the fashion world-touted pastel coats), you will be a star in your tangerine dream.

Current Proof:

Louis Vuitton: Front Row - Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Spring/Summer 2014

Buro 24/7 Editor Miroslava Duma wore this amazing orange get-up to Paris Fashion Week this year and note how even with the  polished black accents it does not look Halloween-y at all, just really amazing.

Come one, you knew this example was coming, right? How could we possibly discuss orange winter coats without mentioning Audrey Hepburn’s amazing orange cocoon coat and brown fur hat when she played New York’s darling Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Exactly.
