There is no doubt that Kelis’s mandate is consistent with the rest of her career- which she is now confident in saying has paved a few rocky roads. “I think that a lot of the things I’ve done have changed the way people look at black women, and women in business in general,” she says. As for the next crop of women starting to discover themselves in the spotlight, Kelis refrains from being critical. “I refuse to complete-it’s horrifying, and it gives me anxiety,” she says. “And it’s really unrealistic and unfair for people to be so harsh and judgemental about these young women who are figuring out their sexuality and their life on a pop platform and on a stage. It’s not the easiest thing to do. I went through it, and yet here we are.”

“I’m trying to show a more positive outlook on the future by getting people to think about green buildings,” she explains. “I want them to imagine having a city that welcomes the natural world. Depending on whom you ask, her work is either breathtaking or apocalyptic: “A lot of people look at my paintings and think [they are about] the end of the world, that nature is taking over. Others think [they’re] optimistic and beautiful.”

She strongly believes her heydey was much more progressive. “You can’t compare today to the ’60s. We were in a real revolution,” she says. “The pill and women’s liberation happened, the people revolted. It was a time when so many ideas came out and people woke up. But escaping into the ’60s is also wrong–it can’t be repeated.”
