Gloss Over This: Mindy Kaling

“Of course I’m riddled with doubts like every other creative, neurotic person, but if you don’t display them all the time, you’re seen as overconfident,” she says. “I’ve worked in television for 10 years straight. If I were a man, it wouldn’t be considered strange [to have confidence] at all.”

-Mindy Kaling in “Running The Show” by Maureen Halushak in Flare October 2014

Take Note: Smart Set’s ‘Boy Meets Girl’ Fall 2014 Campaign

You know Smart Set, that practical if forgettable Canadian clothing chain known for basics and sharp wardrobe staples? While the name might not immediately come to mind, we happened upon their Fall 2014 campaign and lo and behold, it’s made a relatively bold choice for a mall-standard store, just hinting at more tomboy-friendly clothing.

Their campaign is called “Boy Meets Girl,” with the tag line of:

Hey, handsome girl. Made for a man, fit for her (so you can confidently mix his fabric with your classics).

While it’s not exactly going to have favourites Wildfang or Peau De Loup shaking in their boots anytime soon, it’s interesting to see such a retailer hint at LGBTQ2S-specific/friendly styles. The main model has short hair, and there is one shot below where we’ve got ladies lookin’ at ladies with a heart between them:

Is it revolutionary? Not as much as other brands or campaigns. Is it the start of something new? Maybe–just think, this campaign is in Smart Sets in malls all across Canada, small towns and bigger ones, so the sheer saturation of the campaign in this store might get some people thinking. We’ve expressed woe before that more butch-friendly style is often over looked by fashion magazines, fashion chains, etc. This campaign shows that things are definitely changing, showing off something we’d like to see more of.

Gloss over this: Drew Barrymore

DrewFIFH

“I’ve gotten in massive trouble for saying ‘You can’t have it all.’ People ere just furious with me. I feel terrible–can I adjust it to ‘You can’t do it all?’ Because I can’t. I can’t do everything and have it be done well and feel good about all of it. Everything’s going to get watered down’ not everything’s going to get enough power behind it. I don’t want to be at work thinking I”m not spending enough time with my kids. I don’t wan to abandon everything I’ve ever done in my life now because I have a family. I just know that my kids are going to come first-they’re going to get the majority of everything–and then what I have left over is going to have to get very streamlined.”

-Drew Barrymore in “Flower Power” by Kathryn Hudson in Elle Canada October 2014

The Show: Veronica Mars

The Icon: Veronica Mars

veronica mars

The Look: Vera Wang Spring 2015 Ready to Wear

Why She’s Wearing It: The ever-capable ‘crow amongst the doves’, the one and only V. Mars had that razor-sharp wit and devotion to justice we all wish we’d had when we were 16. All grown up, here’s a tomboy-ish look we think she would favour for that rare moment when she’s off the clock.
