Fantasy Vacation Getup: Dictionopolis

belle lettres
Have you read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster? It’s a classic kids novel published in 1961, it’s up there with Roald Dahl and Lewis Carroll. Even if you’re an adult it’s worth the read. At one point the protagonist, Milo, happens upon Dictionopolis, a city of letters and the alphabet. If you’re going there bust out all your monogrammed accessories and clothing items that have literary allusions–they’d appreciate it. Don’t wear anything too fussy though– you’re adventuring after all, and Dictionopolis is just one stop on the way to other must-sees like the Valley of Sound and for you math nerds, Digitopolis. Just go read the book.

Fantasy Vacation Outfit: Adventuring in the Land of Ooo

adventure time fionna cake
Oh Fionna, your first has touched my heart.
Sometimes a gal has gotta go adventuring. Here is an outfit that would make your journeys in Ooo as amusing as they are stylish. We love a lot of things about Adventure Time--it’s feminist, recognizes gender fluidity, touches on queer identities, hilarious, consistently passes the Bechdel Test and Mako Mori Test, and the women in it are awesome. The birth of Fionna and Cake is a result of some clever gender-swapping –and we’re obviously a huge fan of the results.

Fantasy Vacation Get-Up: Tea at Versailles

Valentino pink dress, 4,935 CAD / Nicholas Kirkwood stiletto heels, 905 CAD / Coast box clutch, 93 CAD / Choker necklace, 40 CAD / Chanel , 495 CAD / Her Curious Nature floral hair accessory, 60 CAD

Sofia Coppola’s 2006 Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst perfectly captured the opulent, youthful setting of Versailles during Marie Antoinette’s first few years as the Dauphine. When you travel back in time to enjoy to with her Highness, ditch the corset so you can breathe, but be sure to wear your most lady-like, colourful, and well, regal, garments.

Fantasy Vacation Get-up: Camazotz

Zadig & Voltaire short sleeve shirt, 185 CAD / Mango jacket, 50 CAD / Current/Elliott , 370 CAD / Ballet sneaker, 30 CAD / Quilted bag, 57 CAD / Rolex jewelry / Vivienne Westwood colorful scarve, 240 CAD / American Apparel clear eyeglass, 45 CAD
Okay, so Camazotz, the dystopian society/planet from Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time is anything but a hot vacation getaway. However, sometimes life’s circumstances are hardly ideal, and you wind up facing your biggest fears. We’re inspired by misfit Meg Murray’s tomboy style as she goes to rescue a member of her family who has travelled through space and time, guided by three of the most fantastic muses we’ve read of: Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. As such, here is a comfy outfit that will have you read to planet-hop and adventure to your heart’s content.

Fantasy Vacation Get-Up: Hogwarts

We love Harry Potter–books, movies, and are saving up for a trip to the Orlando amusement park. However, we can’t help but notice the fashion in the wizarding world is really rather dull. Just because you get to cover everything up with a cloak/cape doesn’t mean you get to dress in a boring way.

Then again, maybe we’re being too harsh…when you’re dodging Dementors, Death Eaters, and possessed professors, something you can run and duel in is preferred. So here’s a cozy outfit that will keep you warm in Charms class (come on, even without spells the castle is no doubt quite draughty), yet is fashionable enough to go get a butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks on the weekend.

BONUS: If you want to stick to classic tweeds and muted colours for adventuring around the fantastical world Rowling created, get inspired by the Mulberry Fall 2013 collection.
