There are certain movies a person who is into fashion “must” see: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Royal Tenenbaums, Almost Famous, Belle de Jour, La Dolce Vita, etc. I think one movies that has yet to officially enter the fashion world canon is The Brothers Bloom, directed by Rian Johnson. It stars Rachel Weisz, Rinko Kikuchi, Adrien Brody, and Mark Ruffalo. While the gents are incredibly dressed in this show, we tip our hat to the ladies. Though the movie is from 2008, the looks are still pretty on-trend and besides, that’s what makes a fashion movie a fashion movie: the clothes will always look good no matter what. Plus, they are traveling through all kinds of weather in the show and are dressed accordingly–fashion for all seasons!
While Kikuchi’s character “Bangbang,” the explosives expert in the film (not kidding, yes it is awesome) unfortunately fulfills the “Silent Asian Character” trope, she’s still super amazing. To wit: a man sidles up to her at one point at a bar and says, “You must be pretty big into anime,” and Bangbang rolls her eyes and the camera shifts and there is an offscreen explosion implying she ended his attempt at flirting explosively. Her clothes are so chic, we’ve mentioned them before on the site but have never done any screen stills to capture her enviable style. Plus, for the vast majority of the show, her looks are pretty butch which always catches my eye.
Then there’s Weisz”s character, Penelope. Unfortunately, she’s a bit of a MPDG though she is very intelligent and talented. Nevertheless, her style is excellent– mod and European chic details and lots of hats. Actually, both Penelope and Bangbang wear lots of hats which I definitely appreciate. At any rate, enough talking, just see for yourself…
This movie has convinced me that I need red leather gloves. Previously, I thought they were way to Michael Jackson for me, but they are clearly a wardrobe staple.
Very mod details above, no? Those sunglasses, and that red pleather bucket hat–who knew they could actually look half decent let alone supa stylish?
Above: I love the silhouette of Bangbang’s ensemble. Very flowy and it would seem baggy but it’s perfectly tailored and proportioned. Note to self.
Below: Darn it, I need white leather gloves, too!
Above: So this is how you wear hunter green, red, with gold details without looking Christmas-y!
Above and below: She is wearing a silver brocade tie. She is wearing a silver brocade tie. I need one! And that hat!
Above: Even passed out in the background Bangbang still looks amazing.
Above: This blonde fur coat struck me as hideous at first. And it still is, but Bangbang rocks it, no?
