Delighted to see the care with which Karen combed over her prayer scarf, Lusya stood beside her and fingered the fringe. It had always been Lusya’s favourite, this periwinkle-coloured scarf with the careful embroidering in Old Slavonic: “And he shall give his angels charge over thee.” As Karen scoured for fibre evidence and circled the stains on the scarf, Lusya pulled up a stool. She watched Karen treat each stain with a series of amino die blots. With a single drop of the dark substance, a faint blotch turned brilliant purple, revealing grooves and whorls, and Lusya realized with a start that Karen had just raised a print from the protein.
