Women and Poverty

There are over 19 million women in Canada living on low wages and are right at the poverty line. Closet Feminist wants to reach out to these women through development programs to support their needs.
Poverty is often due to the inability for women to gain jobs, whether it is due to discrimination or not having an education or set of skills that allow them to obtain high-paying jobs. Some may also be hampered by physical and mental handicaps that prevent them from getting good jobs. This is a serious problem. While there are women who live off social welfare assistance, this does not …

Sexual Assault and Harassment

Sexual assault and harassment remain pervasive in Canadian society. Harassment happens when women are the object of lewd comments and jokes that attack her person or are intended to shame her. Assault involves unwanted touching or physical attacks against women.
In a 2014 poll, it has been shown that over 43% of women have been harassed in the workplace. While there are policies at work to limit incidences of sexual assault and harassment, these crimes are a product of cultural and domestic upbringing.
There are cases where people do not speak up about assault or harassment. …

Why Must We Address Gender-based Violence?

– It has also been noted that 67% of Canadians have known at least one woman who has experienced violence at home or outside.
– There are also cases of Canadian women and children sleeping in …

Simple Steps To Become An Ally In The Workplace

The workplace has not always been a place where women thrive and express themselves. Sexual harassment and cases of assault are abound, even in places where security of tenure allows women to no longer be exploited by their employers. In these times, women can only count on the support of their fellows and you can learn how to do this in a few easy steps. Starting by inviting colleagues over for an old fashioned smoked BBQ is a good start.

History Is Important To the Future of Feminism

Feminism, in all of its forms, has been grossly misunderstood in the past and even within our contemporary society. Some see it as a movement to usurp roles traditionally held by men or social conventions that protect people from harm and moral decay. Many pop up stores around Canada were created by driven female entrepreneurs. Others view this as a movement to replace men with women as the dominant sex. In actuality, feminism allows for women to stand on equal ground with men and for gender not to be treated as a barrier or factor in discrimination.
The #MeToo Movement has been …
